The San Joaquin Bike Coalition is excited to be participating in this nation-wide event, a first for Stockton.

On Friday, September 15, 2017, members of the Stockton community will join artists, activists, and citizens around the world in transforming parking spaces into temporary public parks and social spaces, as part of Stockton’s inaugural participation in an annual event called PARK(ing) Day.

Based on the concept that feeding a parking meter is a low cost, short term lease on a small piece of land, participants are encouraged to craft temporary installations that encourage a new look at what’s possible in a public space. The San Joaquin Bike Coalition is pleased to present Stockton’s first ever PARK(ing) Day, and has teamed up with local creatives, businesses, and agencies to create five installations throughout the Downtown core on Friday, September 15, 2017.  PARK(ing) Day spaces will be in place during normal business hours, and organizers encourage visiting multiple spaces.

PARK(ing) Day After Parties will be celebrated at Cast Iron Trading Co., Channel Brewing Co., Bella Vista Restaurant, and the Deliberation Room, with live music and food/drink specials.

Park(ing) Day was founded in 2005 by an art/design studio based in San Francisco called Rebar and since that time has grown into a global movement that occurs in hundreds of cities and dozens of countries around the world. The basic idea behind Park(ing) Day is to re-think the ways streets are used and to re-imagine the possibilities of the urban landscape by taking over a metered parking spot and transforming it into something else like a parklet, a music venue, a photo booth space…the possibilities are endless really.
